  8. DharmaNet is more than just an electronic mail and file conduit. It is a
  9. community of Buddhists and non-Buddhists who share a commitment to "service"
  10. and "practice," improving themselves and their local/global communities.
  11. DharmaNet is an exploration of how to use these online technologies to
  12. nurture
  13. and cultivate generosity, mindfulness, insight.

  15. All DharmaNet services are offered freely, in the Buddhist tradition of
  16. //dana// or "generosity." These include:

  18.     *  e-mail access to DharmaNet sites around the world
  19.     *  echomail conferences, including such subjects as Buddhist Dharma,
  20.        Meditation, Women in Buddhism, Race and Buddhism, Engaged Buddhism,
  21.        Buddhist Ethics, Nonviolence (Ahimsa), Buddhist Studies, News
  22.        From/About Tibet, as well as more specific focuses in Zen, Theravada,
  23.        Vajrayana, and Pure Land traditions.
  24.     *  an international file distribution network, disseminating Dharma talks
  25.        and teachings, from such respected teachers as Robert Aitken, Taizan
  26.        Maezumi, John Tarrant, Joanna Macy, the Dalai Lama, Chagdud Tulku
  27.        Rinpoche, Ngakpa Chogyam Rinpoche, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sister Chan Khong,
  28.        Sister Ayya Khema, Ajahn Chah, Webu Sayadaw, and many others.
  29.     *  electronic editions of Buddhist newsletters, such as INQUIRING MIND,
  30.        CLEAR MIND, BLIND DONKEY, BHAVANA SOCIETY NEWSLETTER, SOCIETY FOR
  31.        TANTRIC STUDIES NEWSLETTER, etc., as well as DharmaNet's own bimonthly
  32.        journal, GASSHO
  33.     *  an international calendar of Buddhist meditation retreats
  34.     *  the DharmaBase project, compiling regional directories of Buddhist
  35.        practice centers, monasteries, and organizations
  36.     *  INSIGHT, an Internet "mailing list," allowing Internet users to
  37.        participate in DharmaNet discussions
  38.     *  online file libraries at many DharmaNet host sites, as well as on the
  39.        Internet (DharmaNet Electronic File Archive at sunsite.unc.edu)
  40.     *  opportunities to serve, such as helping transcribe books from
  41.        publishers such as the Buddhist Publication Society for free
  42.        distribution as "electronic books," helping on the volunteer staff of
  43.        GASSHO, helping collect data for the calendar and directory projects,
  44.        helping establish online liasons with practice centers and monasteries,
  45.        and more.
